"The grass is no fear - the dust is not fixed"

In April 2017, a local artist from Shenzhen invited an industrial event to an old industrial village in Jingui Village, Pingshan District at the invitation of Shenzhen Pingshan District. The local industrial immigrant village was once visited with local resources and indigenous culture. The activation activity is called the Golden Land Art Project.

I was fortunate enough to be invited by the curators here to enter the project for a 20-day art residency. Most of the invited artists are from Shenzhen. Although their respective directions are different, they are all people who know the culture of Shenzhen. Only me is a foreign artist who comes to Shenzhen to participate in the public sculpture exhibition every year.

A few days before the show, the curator took the artist to a field trip to the local abandoned straw hat factory and the foam factory. The artist was asked to use local materials and human elements to create.

In the straw hat factory that was abandoned for nearly six years, I found a straw hat and a woven material. I saw these abandoned materials feeling a feeling of excitement and sentimentality. The prosperity of the former handicraft products has passed away in this thick dust, and the handicraft industry replaced by the modern assembly line has a mildew smell in this fast-growing emerging Chinese city. However, with the changes in the city and the rapid development of China's economy, the speed of this industrial suburbs is changing faster and faster. Art has entered into these consumption wrinkles, becoming an activator and also inspiring art with themes. A functional way to develop.

Therefore, I used the abandoned straw hat here as my creative material. I broke the straw hat into a single unit element and presented them in a state of natural growth with the flexibility and exuberance of the grass itself. A strip of grass is intertwined with each other, climbing each other and spreading each other. The grass strip still retains the hand-woven traces of artificial weaving, grows on the wall, climbs up, down, left, and right. If there is life, it grows wildly.

Here, I also quoted a verse in Sartre's "Leaves of Grass", “This is the grass that grows wherever the land is, and the water is ." To deal with the irreversibility of the freedom and growth I want to express, whether it is people or cities, are growing without fear under the rules of nature.
